Claude Haiku 5.5: API Prices, Limits and Monthly Credits

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on 7 October 2026, alongside lower Claude Sonnet 5.5 cache-read prices and announced monthly API credits for eligible Max and Team subscribers. The launch matters to people building assistants, automations and small business tools: short requests cost substantially less per token, but longer prompts enter a higher pricing tier. What is Claude Haiku 5.5 designed to do?

Haiku is the smaller, speed-focused member of Anthropic’s Claude range. Anthropic positions this release for repeated, narrowly defined jobs such as summaries, information classification and supporting tasks inside larger agent workflows. It can also use browsers and computers through supported tools. Those capabilities describe what developers can build; they do not mean a model has unrestricted access to your device.

For example, a shop could use a small model to sort incoming messages into delivery, returns and product questions before a more capable assistant handles complicated cases. A creator could use it to produce short summaries of transcripts, then check those summaries before writing a final script. These are suggested applications, not workflows we tested.

Anthropic calls Haiku 5.5 its fastest model at standard speeds, with an exception for Opus models running in Fast Mode. Its launch benchmarks are company-reported results. They do not establish that Haiku will be the fastest or most accurate option for every reader’s task. Read the announcement and its qualifications.

Claude Haiku 5.5 pricing: the 100,000-token boundary

A token is a unit used to measure model input and output. It is not necessarily a whole word. Anthropic’s current pricing documentation lists the following standard Claude API rates:

Haiku 5.5 standard API prices per million tokens, checked 8 October 2026
Charge Prompt up to 100,000 tokens Prompt over 100,000 tokens
Input $0.10 $0.50
Output $0.50 $2.50
Five-minute cache write $0.125 $0.625
Cache read $0.01 $0.05

The lower rates include a prompt of exactly 100,000 tokens; the higher tier applies to prompts over that length. The documentation prices the request by its prompt length. Do not assume the higher rate is merely a charge on tokens beyond the boundary.

To make the numbers concrete, consider two hypothetical, uncached requests. A 20,000-token input with 2,000 output tokens costs approximately $0.003. A 120,000-token input with the same output length costs approximately $0.065. These are arithmetic examples using the listed rates, excluding tool charges and other modifiers—not observed bills or an estimate of your monthly costs.

The practical lesson is to measure complete requests, including accumulated conversation context. Ten short instructions inside a long-running session may still produce a large prompt. Avoid estimating cost from the final question alone.

Who can access Haiku 5.5?

Anthropic’s Haiku product page lists access for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users on Claude’s web and mobile apps, and availability in Claude Code. Model access does not establish an unlimited message allowance.

Developers can use claude-haiku-5-5 on the Claude Platform. Anthropic also lists AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry availability. Cloud-provider pricing and regional access should be checked with the provider; the table above covers Anthropic’s standard first-party API rates.

The model specifications list text and image input, text output, a one-million-token context window and adaptive thinking with medium effort as the default. A large context window is a capacity limit, not a promise that filling it is economical.

What changed for Sonnet and subscription API credits?

Sonnet 5.5 cache reads have fallen from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens. The cut concerns reused, cached input—not every input or output token. Anthropic’s estimate of lower overall agent costs depends on how much a workload reuses context. Source: current model and cache pricing.

The separate subscriber-credit documentation specifies $100 monthly for Max 5x and $200 for Max 20x. Team credits combine $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, with a $500 monthly cap for the whole team. Three Standard seats and two Premium seats therefore produce a $260 pool, not $500 for each user.

New subscribers must spend seven days on an eligible plan before claiming. Unused credit expires each billing cycle, or monthly on annual subscriptions, without rollover. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible for this benefit.

According to the Help Center’s claiming instructions, an eligible subscriber or Team owner links one Claude Console organization through billing settings. Appropriate Console permissions are required. Credits cover eligible Claude Platform services, including API use, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK. They exclude interactive Claude Code, extra usage in Claude apps and third-party cloud platforms.

No payment card is required just to claim the credit. Nevertheless, review the selected organization and billing settings carefully before connecting an application. A subscription benefit and an application’s spending controls are different things.

What should users check before switching?

Existing API integrations need more than a model-name substitution. Anthropic’s migration guide explains changes to token counting, thinking and request parameters. The newer tokenizer can produce approximately 30% more tokens for the same input than Haiku 4.5, depending on content. Recalculate costs with the new model instead of reusing old token counts.

Our suggested evaluation is small and practical: choose representative tasks, define what a correct answer looks like, record errors and elapsed time, and compare total costs after retries. For customer-facing work, also check how refusals and missing information are handled. We have not performed this evaluation, so this article does not recommend replacing a working system solely because its token prices look attractive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Haiku 5.5 available now?

Yes. Anthropic dates the release to 7 October and lists it as active. Account and platform limits still apply.

Is Haiku 5.5 always 90% cheaper?

No. The 90% comparison concerns listed per-token rates against Haiku 4.5 for shorter prompts. Longer prompts, changed token counts, tools and retries affect the actual bill.

Do Pro subscribers get the new API credits?

No. The published benefit covers eligible Max and Team plans.

Can I use those credits for Claude Code?

Not for interactive Claude Code or extra app usage. The Agent SDK is separately listed as eligible.

Should I use Haiku instead of Sonnet or Opus?

Evaluate the task first. Short, repeated jobs and demanding, multi-step work can have different quality and cost requirements.

Haiku 5.5 makes a small-model evaluation cheaper to attempt. Its most useful changes are the specific rates, access routes and credit conditions—not a blanket promise that every AI workflow will become cheaper.
